Can You Brush Your Teeth with Matcha?
Over the last several years, matcha seems to have become a real darling of coffeeshops and Instagram feeds. And we get it. Because frankly, there’s a lot to like about matcha! Let’s take a closer look at this brilliant green powder: where it comes from, and why it can be a formidable addition to toothpaste and other oral care products.
What is matcha?
Ever have green tea? Well, then you’ve *almost* *sort of* had matcha. You see, matcha is technically a green tea as it’s derived from the same plant (“Camellia sinensis”) as the type of green tea we’re typically used to drinking in the west. In Japan and China though, matcha’s been consumed for centuries. And unlike the more conventional form of green tea, where leaves are steeped in hot water and then removed, matcha powder is whisked into hot water and then all consumed together. Sort of like a super-powered, bright green version of instant hot cocoa… …sort of.
How is matcha made?
While matcha is derived from the same source plant as traditional green tea, its path to finished product is fairly different. Three to four weeks before matcha is scheduled to be harvested, it’s covered so that it doesn’t receive direct sunlight. In response to this, the sun-hungry plants increase their production of chlorophyll and amino acids – resulting in matcha’s characteristically vibrant green color. After harvesting, the plants are de-stemmed and de-veined, then ground up and- boom. Now they’re officially matcha powder.
