hemp seed oil

by connie gregson , friendly head of r+d at hello products

Here at hello, a big part of our mission is to be thoughtful about the ingredients we put in our products – because we know that you’re thoughtful about what you put in your body. Since there tends to be a certain amount of confusion around hemp and hemp-derived substances, let’s cover the basics of what hemp seed oil is (and isn’t), how it’s made and why we’ve decided to include it in some of our products.

What is Hemp Seed Oil and How is it Made?

As the name would suggest, hemp seed oil comes from the hemp plant – a variety of cannabis plant that is grown specifically for the use of its fiber and edible seeds. Unlike “marijuana” varieties of the cannabis species (which can contain significant amounts of the psychoactive chemical THC), concentrations of THC in hemp plants are both lower and regulated. In fact, hemp seeds themselves contain almost no  detectable amounts of THC whatsoever. We bet you’ve probably seen these seeds in your local health food store, where their high levels of protein and unsaturated fat have made them a popular snack. So sprinkle them on your salad and thank us later.

Hemp seed oil is ideally created by “cold pressing” these lil’ hemp seeds . Essentially, the seeds undergo a serious squeeze. After the oil is extracted from them, it’s used in foods, cooking oils, lotions, and –  yep- oral care products.

Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD Oil

The terms “hemp seed oil” and “CBD oil” are often confused. “CBD oil” is another cannabis-derived substance that’s included in some health products these days. The big difference is that while hemp seed oil is extracted from hemp seeds, CBD oil is extracted from the hemp plant itself, making use of the hemp flowers, stems and leaves in its production. So: “hemp seed oil = extracted from hemp seeds” ; “CBD oil = extracted from hemp flowers, stems and leaves.”

Why Use Hemp Seed Oil in Toothpaste?

We’ve described that hemp seed oil is both largely safe and widely used. What are some of the benefits of using our hemp seed oil line of products?  Well, our hemp seed oil pastes and rinse rock hemp seed oil, coconut oil, and Yakima Valley spearmint to take the moisturizing and mind-blowing freshness up to 11, while our hemp seed oil floss is textured to gently grab and lift away the nasty stuff hiding between your beautiful pearlies. and bonus, it’s coated with vegan candelilla wax to take you to your hempy place.
